Frequently asked Questions

Core aeration plug from lawn aerator in Champlin

How often should I aerate?

Most lawns  receive a substantial benefit from annual core aeration.  Lawns in heavy clay soil or those that receive intense use should be aerated twice a year.  Lawns in loose, sandy soil can get by with an aeration every 2 years.

When should I aerate?

Lawns with cool season turf like we have in the Twin Cities can be aerated in the spring between mid April and early June, or from the middle of August until late October.

Will lawn aeration damage my sprinkler system?

Yes it can.  We ask that you mark your sprinkler heads with marker flags or paint before we come out.  Sprinkler lines and utilities should be deep enough that aeration will not harm them. If you have an underground dog fence (Invisible Fence) please mention this.

Can I water and fertilize after aeration?

Right after aeration is an ideal time to fertilize or water your lawn.  The holes created by core aeration allow water and nutrients to reach the root system quickly.

How long will it take for the cores to disappear from my lawn?

Depending on weather conditions and rain, he cores will break down naturally and disappear into the lawn over time, usually a couple of weeks. As the cores disintegrate, the soil microbes they contain will help break down thatch, so don’t remove them. Watering and mowing also help to break down the cores sooner.

When is the best time to overseed?

Just like core aeration, overseeding is ideally done during the spring and late summer and fall. This time is when the temperatures and rainfall are favorable, and the grass is actively growing.

What type of grass seed do you use?

We use multiple seed blends depending on the conditions in your lawn. Some seed blends are better for shady conditions while others will thrive in sunlight. Fine bladed grass species often have the best appearance for a lawn, but do not stand up to foot traffic as well. So we select the best seed that meets your situation. All our seed blends are a high-quality commercial seed and contain multiple species of improved grass types so that you have the highest success rate.

What forms of payment do you take?

We accept  either cash or check.  The goal is to perform top quality work at a reasonable price.  An invoice with a return envelope will be left in your door and you can simply mail your payment in.  Processing fees on credit cards are simply too much for us as a small business.  Accepting them would necessitate raising the price for our services.  Thank you for understanding.
