Lawn Core Aeration

Compacted soil prevents grass from establishing a healthy root system and keeps water, oxygen and fertilizer from reaching the roots.

Walking on the  lawn, pets and mowing will compact soil and stress lawns. Rain and irrigation further compact the soil, reducing large air spaces where roots readily grow. Soil compaction is greatest in the upper 1 to 2 inches of soil.

Core aeration will relieve soil compaction, allowing your grass to grow deeper roots and make better use of water and fertilizer.

Benefits of core aeration include:

  • Improved  oxygen exchange between the soil and atmosphere
  • Improved  fertilizer uptake and use.
  • Reduced  water runoff and puddling.
  • Stronger turfgrass roots.
  • Reduced soil compaction.
  • Better heat and drought tolerance
  • Enhanced thatch breakdown.

Overseeding

Overseeding your lawn in conjunction with aerating is one of the single best things you can do  to improve your lawn's  thickness, color and resistance to drought and disease.

Most lawns were originally established  with common varieties of turfgrass.  Overseeding with newer improved strains of grass seed can help your lawn better withstand disease, insects, shady conditions and general wear and tear.

Overseeding can reduce the need for fertilizer, water and pesticides.  Most importantly, your lawn will be thicker, greener and healthier.

We use improved varieties of seed from local seed wholesalers that are tailored to local conditions.  Seed is broadcast at a rate of 3 pounds per thousand square feet of turf.

Liming

Many lawns in our area tend to have acidic soil indicated by a low pH level.   In an acidic soil, grass may be unable to benefit from the nutrients in your soil, including those you add through fertilizers.   Cool season grasses grow best in soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0

Benefit of liming include:

  •  Balanced soil pH, also commonly called the acidity or alkalinity
  • Adds calcium and magnesium that grass needs to grow and be resilient through times of stress like extreme temperatures and drought
  • Helps with new seed, new sod or existing yards
  • Puts nutrients in the soil that sometimes are not there
  • Benefits other micro-organisms in the soil
  • Helps with thatch decomposition
  • Maintains or restores soil affected by environmental factors
  • Boosts the effectiveness of fertilizer and herbicide
  • Strong root growth
